Il mondo contemporaneo ci fa costruire un’immagine digitale, da mettere in una vetrina per il mondo e sul mondo. La maschera utilizzata nella serie fotografica veniva indossata esclusivamente dalle donne a tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo. La moretta, questo il suo nome, era una piccola maschera in velluto nero. La cosa più curiosa di questo travestimento era che non fosse dotata di bocca: non permetteva di proferire alcuna parola. Veniva infatti tenuta aderente al viso mordendo un bottone al suo interno. Da questa peculiarità ha origine il suo secondo nome: la muta. Divenne molto popolare proprio per questo suo aspetto. Il travestimento offerto rendeva estremamente seducenti e desiderabili. Nella serie fotografica Mimesi, il vuoto che la maschera crea, simboleggia la necessità di ognuno di avere una realtà sociale, differente da quella sintetica dei social. Infatti l’immagine artefatta, seppur necessaria, ci costringe ad una nuova forma di solitudine e di lontananza (distanza) sociale. Il vuoto cromatico che la maschera crea, vuole rappresentare la finta immagine che proiettiamo verso l’esterno.
The contemporary world forces us to construct a digital image, to showcase it to the world and on the world. The mask used in the photographic series was worn exclusively by women between the 17th and 18th centuries. The moretta, as it was called, was a small black velvet mask. The most curious thing about this disguise was that it had no mouth: it did not allow one to utter any words. Instead, it was held close to the face by biting a button inside. This peculiarity gave rise to its second name: the muta. It became very popular precisely for this appearance. The disguise offered made one extremely seductive and desirable. In the photographic series Mimesi, the void created by the mask symbolizes everyone’s need for a social reality, different from the synthetic one of social media. In fact, the artificial image, although necessary, forces us into a new form of solitude and social distance. The chromatic void created by the mask represents the false image we project outward.
